What is the minimum requirement computer (physical device) for install and run NS2?
specification that you need to install and run the Network Simulator NS2 in your device:
several ways allow you to install ns2 in your device. Of course, the hardware that you need totally depends on the way that you will use to deal with NS2.Hence, we will start with some of those ways that allow you to install the simulator and the hardware that you will need according to the way that you will use.
We will divide our article to the following main topics:
1. Install NS2 using the Linux system.
2. Install NS2 using Virtual Machine.
3. Install NS2 on the Windows system.
1. Install NS2 using the Linux system:-
First of all, if you are a beginner user for NS2 try to install the program on the Linux machine.
However, if you are not a Linux user or even you are not familiar with it. The most efficient and productive way to deal with NS2 is through Linux.
You don't need to be professional in Linux to install, code and implement in NS2. Later we will talk about the software, but in this article, we talk about the hardware that you need.
To be honest, installing NS2 in Linux Not only more efficient but also if you install NS2 in Linux OS you no longer need a high-level hardware device to install it compared to other ways.
So you could install Linux OS in your PC or Laptop. In case you couldn't finish your work without Microsoft Windows applications and programs. Hence, you can make your device a dual boot OS. I guarantee that will allow you to finish your tasks on windows and also use Linux for your simulator.
Go on and install Linux on your device as the first step and we will talk later about version and Linux flavor later on in another post.
2. Install NS2 using Virtual Machine:-
Another alternative way to install NS2 in Linux also. By install Virtual machine (VM) in windows and install Linux in the VM to allow you to install NS2 above the Linux system without losing windows OS.
Many NS2 users bias to this solution cause they are familiar with Windows OS and all of there work done on Windows. Hence, they didn't give any sacrifice by losing their routine.
Thus, If you prefer to work with Windows OS and have a high-level Specification computer you could use this method.
Install one of the common personal Virtual Machine for example 'Oracle VM VirtualBox' which gives free packages for personal users. In addition, you can use another Virtual Machine like, 'VMWare workstation', also give you free packages.
In the end, you have to take into consideration that this method will cost you more processing and need high-level devices with high RAM.
3. Install NS2 on the Windows system:-
From my experience in NS2, installing NS2 direct to the Windows OS is hard and exhausting. Try to search "how to install NS2 for Windows OS". the only way that you will found is using Cygwin which is another software that simulates Linux like environment under windows OS. Finally, That is the difficult path that you will set up Cygwin, X-Server for display and following the instruction that you will found many of them.I didn't recommend this method for anyone. you gonna lose your time.
Our next number will be on average and approximately:
The following is the minimum requirements
Take into consideration if you use a virtual machine your actual device should be higher to give the generated machine a little above the following requirements:
Processor: Any Processor above 500 MHz
RAM: 128Mb
Hard Disk: 10 Gb
Ns is fairly large. The 'all-in-one' package requires about 320MB of disk space to build.
